Best Power Banks for Samsung Smartphones

If you were wondering what one Ben Franklin could get you, we've got the list for you.

Table of Contents

With Samsung smartphones being the most popular Android phones right now, we wanted to compile the best power banks for Samsung Smartphones. This is because despite the fact that all Samsung phones are Power Delivery compliant, they will charge much faster using their in house fast charge protocols. In our experience and testing Samsung smartphones fail to negotiate the fastest charge rate when using Power Delivery alone. This is why in this article, we will be showing you how exactly your Samsung phone charges and why the power banks we picked are the best bets for your phone.

How do Samsung Phones Charge?

Samsung phones charge using both Power Delivery 2 and 3 but they almost always fail to negotiate the fastest possible charge rates when using either protocol alone. In saying that, there are more or less two ways Samsung phones fast charge depending on the generation of model you have. If you own a previous generation Samsung (such as the Galaxy S9, S8, note 9 etcNote10 or the Galaxy S10), then your phone charges fastest using Samusing’s Adaptive Fast Charge (AFC). Meanwhile, if you own one of the latest Samsung phones (for example, the Galaxy S20, note 10 or the Galaxy Note20+) then your phone charges using Super Fast Charging.

Now, all Samsung phones from the release of the Galaxy S8 onwards support Power Delivery. This means that using any power bank that supports Power Delivery (more or less anything with a USB-C out port) with your Samsung phone will work but it will most likely fail to negotiate the fastest possible charge rates. To achieve the fastest possible charge ratesFor its fast charging protocols to work, you would need to find a power bank that also supports either QC or AFC for previous generation phoness or Super fast (PPS + PD 3)  for newer models aside from Power Delivery.

Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge (AFC)

AFC maxes out at 15 watts; meaning that the fastest rate at which your phone can charge is at 15 watts of output. It’s based around Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) and it’s QC compliant. This means that if you have a power bank that has a max output of 15 watts or more above and that supports QC or AFC, it can charge your phone at its maximum speed. Phones that charge best with ACF are the following:

Samsung Galaxy Fold, S10e, S10, S10+, Note9, S9, S9+, Note8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6, S6+ and S6 edge.

Samsung Super Fast Charging

Currently, Super Fast allows your phone to charge up to 45 watts (rumours say that it will increase to 65 watts soon). In reality though, the time to achieve a full charge charge speed is almost indistinguishable from 25 watts (see graph). Aside from that, the difference between AFC and Super Fast Charging is that the latter requires Power Delivery 3 and Programmable Power Supply (PPS) in order for it to work. This means that for you to utilize this fast charging protocol, you would need to find a power bank with at least 25 watts of output and that supports PPS or that is PPS compliant.

Note: All efficiency and capacity data comes from our testing of these specific power banks.

To make our list of the best AFC power banks, here’s what we’re looking for: at least 15 watts of maximum output, good efficiency, good features, and AFC compatibility. Starting off with 10k packs, here are our picks:

RAVPower PD Pioneer 10,00mAhRAVPower PD Pioneer

Best Overall

This is a great pack, and our favorite in the 10,000mah range not just for Samsung users but also for most other smartphones and gadgets in the market. It fits the category perfectly as it i’s AFC compliant and it has 29 watts of output. This means that not only does it hit the 15 watt requirement needed for AFC fast charging, you can also use this to charge many other, more power hungry devices as well.

Aukey PB-Y13

Best Budget Pack

This power bank is incredibly cheap, has tremendous efficiency, and is a very slim pack. Despite its comact sizeEven though it’s so compact, it can definitely deliver the power that you need. Uup to 18 watts maximum and AFCin a very fast time frame. For those who prefer smaller form factors or thinner power banks, this is a great option for you.

Samsung Super Fast 25W Portable Charger

Best Futureproof

While the Samsung Super Fast Portable Charger is on the more expensive side, it does have a massive 25 watts of output – which you don’t need for AFC devices but is always good to have for larger devices. It’s also future-proof you as this one not only has AFC but also Power Delivery and PPS. This means that if you plan to upgrade your phone to a newer Samsung, this pack will still work beautifully with it, charging it at the fastest rate possible whilst on the go.

Now if you’re looking for something larger, we’ve got you covered as well. Here are our recommendations in the 20k pack category:

Best 20,000mAh Power Banks for AFC Samsung Smartphones

(S10e, S10, S10+, Note9, S9, S9+, Note8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6, S6+ and S6 edge.)

Xiaomi Mi Gen 3 Pro

Best Overall (20,000mAh)

The Xiaomi Mi Gen 3 Pro is a great budget pack that covers a huge array of fast charging protocols so you can use it at optimal speeds with your other devices as well. It has great efficiency which means that the pack won’t deplete easily even at higher outputs watt outputs. It’s a great option for those who plan to use this pack for multiple devices since it has great value for money at a price point of around $40. It is tricky to get in some parts of the world though and if you plan to use this pack for your smartphone only, there may be better value options for you.

Aukey PB-Y23

Best Cheap AFC Power bank

The Aukey PB-Y23 20,000mAh pack has a maximum output of only 18 watts (not much for a 20,000mAh pack) but since you only need 15 watts to provide the fastest charge using AFC, it will still work out great. The Aukey has the added advantage of being really light for something in the 20000mAh category as well, which is perfect for those who want more juice without the added bulk. Also, it has tremendous efficiency so this is a great option for you overall for those looking at backup battery primarily for use with their Samsung phone.

RAVPower PD Pioneer 20,000mAh

Best High Output

If you want to be able to charge much bigger devices aside from your Samsung phone, then the RAVPower PD Pioneer 20,000mAh pack is for you. Similar to the 10,000mAh version, it’s a great power bank with good efficiency and massive outputs. Although, you should keep in mind that it does not support PPS so if you’re looking to upgrade your Samsung in the near future, you won’t be able to charge a newer device at the fastest possible rate possible.

Can I Still Use My Existing Power Banks that Support AFC with New Generation Samsungs?

Yes. All of the latest Samsung phones are backwards compliant which means that aside from PPS, they also support AFC. This means that you can use your existing portable chargers to power them up but they’ll only be able to charge at the maximum 15 watt hours of output.

Best Power Banks for Samsung Super Fast Charging Smartphones (Galaxy Note10, Note10+, Galaxy S20, S0+, S20 Ultra)

For the best Super Fast power banks, here’s what we want to see: at least 25 watts of output and both Power Delivery 3 and PPS compatibility. For superfast to work though, you need a cable with an e-marker on it – the cables that come with most packs that support PPS will most likely have it. Starting off again with the 10,000mAh category, here are our recommendations:

Best 10,000 mAh Samsung Super Fast Charging Power Banks

Samsung Super Fast 25W Portable Charger

BEST OVERALL

This pack has tremendous efficiency and output which means that you can also charge larger, power hungry devices on it other than your smartphone. You can use this to power up your iPad, Switch, or laptop. In the laptop’s case though, you wouldn’t get much juice but it’s still an option! It also comes in a slim form factor, supports a wide range of fast charge protocols, and has tremendous efficiency.

Jarv PPS Wireless Exec

BEST WIRELESS

The Jarv PPS Wireless Exec is for those who like wireless charging and for those who have smart watches or wireless earbuds that can utilize the wireless charging technology. It only has 10 watts of output on the wireless side and 18 watts on the USB-C port though which is a drawback of this pack. You would only be able to charge at a maximum of 18 watts even if it does support PPS. One advantage of the Jarv is that it is more widely available than our next wireless power bank option.

ZMI WPB01

BEST BUDGET

The ZMI WPB01 also has wireless charging and is a lot more affordable as you can get it online for around $30. It’s relatively new to the market and is hard to come by in some parts of the world. Another drawback of this pack is that its maximum output is 18 watts so you won’t be able to reach that sweet spot of 25 watts. Although for a budget pack with wireless charging and PPS and Power Delivery, it’s still a great option.

Best 20,000 mAh Samsung Super Fast Charging Power Banks

Moving on to the 20,000mAh category, here are the power banks that we recommend:

ZMI 20,000mAh Pro

BEST OVERALL

It’s of our favorites in this category with its great efficiency, sleek anodized aluminum finish, and huge maximum output of 65 watts. It also has hub functionality which means that it can serve as a USB hub and pass through data from a flash drive to the computer on the go among other things. Due to its combination of high 65 watt output and great efficiencies, you can also efficiently charge most laptops with this pack without depleting it in minutes. A killer pack for all Samsung users!

Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 3 Pro

BEST BUDGET 20,000mAh

As mentioned previously, the Xiaomi Mi Powerpack 3 Pro is another pack with great efficiency and high output. Aside from Power Delivery and PPS, it also supports a bunch of fast charge protocols which means that you can charge most devices on this at max or higher speeds as well apart from your Samsung smartphone. It’s affordable too for a 20,000mAh pack with a $40 price point making it our best budget pack.

Elecjet 20,000mAh PowerPie

Best Compact Size 20,000mAh

The Elecjet 20,000mAh PowerPie has a much smaller size than the other packs that we’ve mentioned in the 20,000 mAh super fast compatible category. It is priced at $50 which isn’t bad at all for a powerbank with PPS, a high output, and a relatively compact form factor. It’s an awesome power bank perfect for Samsung smartphones with 45 watts of output.

Best 27,000 mAh Samsung Super Fast Charging Power Banks

Finally, we’re going to be recommending some large power banks around the 27,000mAh range. These packs are just under the 100 watt output limit that aviation authorities have so these are perfect for long haul flights. They can power phones and smaller devices for many full charges and the high outputs mean they can charge even the biggest laptops. Here are our picks:

Zendure Supertank 27,000mAh

BEST OVERALL

This portable charger has a massive 100 watts of output, great efficiency, and supports a bunch of fast charge protocols. It meets all of the requirements to be able to power up the latest Samsungs. It has a great design and feel as well which is a plus aside from it being capable of so much.

Choetech Portable Charger 26,800mAh

BEST BUDGET 27,000mAh

This pack also has 100 watts of output which means there is not much you cannot charge with it, including the most power hungry laptops. It comes at a price point of just $80 making it a great budget option when compared to most other 27,000mAh with Samsung’s super fast charging requirements. One downside is that it may be hard to get your hands on this at various places around the world but if you can, we would give this a shot over the Zendure Supertank due to the price discount and the almost identical features.

Its a wrap

That wraps up our list of the best power banks for your Samsung smartphones. We based all our opinions on the above mentioned packs on our in-house testing so rest assured that you’ll get the best results possible. All our picks will be able to fast charge your Samsung smartphones as they are all AFC or Super Fast compliant and they will be able to see you through on-the-go. From the 10,000 to the 26,000 category, there’s bound to be a perfect option for you and your Android whether it’s from previous generations or the latest ones.
